Art historian Laura A. Coyle, Ph.D. examines the 60 still-life paintings of flowers that Vincent Van Gogh made in Paris in the late 1800's -- two years before he moved to the South of France and created his magnificently peculiar "Sunflowers."  Many scholars do not recognize the crucial roles that centuries-old still-life painting played in Van Gogh's career, or that "Sunflowers" is essentially a still-life painting.  Dr. Coyle explores how Van Gogh used these paintings as color studies, and how they relate to his earlier works, French flower painting, and flower culture of Paris in the 19th century.
