The Good Hearts Foundation: the role of end-of-life doulas

presented by Bethesda Metro Area Village

The Good Hearts mission is to ease the suffering of the dying and their families by providing End-of-Life Doula services, training, and community education. In this presentation, Bethesda Metro Area Village member Chris Palmer will be interviewing the Executive Director, Tashi Taliaferro, and Emily Cavey, Deputy Director, about the role of End-of-Life Doulas.

It wasn’t more than just a few generations ago when death was considered a village-making event that brought people together in ways nothing else could. When someone was nearing the end of life, extended family members, friends, neighbors, co-workers, church congregations, and others pitched in to provide necessary care and support. Tending to the dying was understood as a normal, natural, and expected part of living in a community.

In today’s world, at least in most of North America, caring for the dying is unfamiliar to most people. Typically, the responsibilities are left to specialists in institutionalized settings, separated from the daily lives of the general population. Unfortunately, this promotes discomfort with seeing, acknowledging, or even talking about death which in turn, impacts negatively how we relate to one another within our most intimate circles and the greater community.

As a society we mistakenly have come to assume death is a disease and dying is a medical condition.

The Good Hearts response to this health care crisis is to challenge the status quo. We not only wish to invite change, we want to implement it, but to do so, we need others to be involved. Join us for this engaging presentation to learn about the role of end-of-life doulas, how you or your loved ones can access end-of-life doula services, and how The Good Hearts training program works in Montgomery County.

Registration is required. The Zoom link will be sent automatically.
