PCV Cultural Arts Program, with social practice artist Suzanne Firstenberg
in coordination with the Potomac Community Center Seniors Program
Suzanne Firstenberg is an American social practice artist. She focuses primarily on large-scale, public art installations that explore current issues with the goal of raising awareness, decreasing stigma, and fostering compassion. Her public art exhibitions, including The Empty Fix Project, In America: Remember, and alienable right to life, explore how topics such as addiction, COVID-19, and gun violence affect Americans and their daily experiences.

Locally, we are most likely to remember the In America: Remember installation on the National Mall, on display in the fall of 2021, which honored Americans who died in the COVID-19 pandemic by blanketing a portion of the National Mall near the Washington Monument with over 600,000 small white flags, one for each life lost. The number of flags rose to 701,133 by the end of the exhibition, reflecting the updated death toll.
Alienable right to life, which dealt with gun ownership and gun violence, was on display at Freedom Plaza in May 2024.
Firstenberg will talk about her work and how she came to be doing public art.
This program is free and open to all.
