Writing fiction inspired by Afghanistan means bearing witness to the rise and fall and rise again of Afghan women. Sparks Like Stars is the story of Sitara Zamani, a survivor of the April '78 coup that resulted from rising Cold War tensions in Afghanistan. It is a bold. illuminating, breathtaking, yet hopeful story of home-America and Afghanistan, tragedy and survival, reinvention and remembrance.
Ms. Hashimi will talk about her research for this novel - old maps of the constellations, redacted CIA documents, and travel diaries of "overlanders" traveling the hippie trail.
